Steve decided to take a couple of his vacation days to catch up on our summer project to remodel the kitchen and dining room. After we moved into the house 16 years ago, I was totally "into" watermelons, so we put up a bright hunter green and white stripe wallpaper with a watermelon and sunflower border. Wallpaper used to be all the rage and we used it everywhere. Now it is not such a hot thing. The problem in an old house is when you have plaster walls underneath the wallpaper.
Having our own little "in house decorator" inspired us to try to get this project completed this summer before the house is full of guests for the fall wedding weekend. Most likely not the best plan in hindsight with so many other things to do, but it will certainly be nice to have it completed!
One of the funniest moments was taking Mary Beth with us to pick out the paint. We left her in the paint chip aisle while we went to look at appliances, after we realized it was going to take a while for her to make her selections. We came back 20 minutes later only to find her still looking and her hands FULL of chips of a wide assortment of colors and combinations. We pretty much had to drag her out of the store!
Steve has textured the walls to help cover the bumps and ridges that are there from 50 years of imperfections of living. But that goes along with the "tuscan" feel of it all. The new countertop of granite will replace the white tile that we put in years ago, but has been impossible to keep the grout clean. (would never recommend white grout in a kitchen!) New cabinet doors, refinishing the wood floors and all new appliances will complete the update. They say you always get your money back out of a kitchen redo. I sure hope so!
Mary Beth will be back in town next week. Let's hope we pass inspection.
